Myofascial Release

Not a stand-alone intervention, but when used in combination with other indicated treatment modalities can help create an efficient and complete plan of care.

Myofascial Release

  • The treatment intervention encompasses many different skilled, hands-on techniques including skin rolling, fascial elongation, cupping, and tool assisted strategies. The myofascia is the layer of tissue that surrounds the muscle and sits below the skin.  When this layer is restricted, it may result in pain and restricted range of motion.  Techniques that are aimed at improving the mobility of this layer include:

Skin rolling, muscle play, and skin rolling

  • Techniques used to improve length, muscular mobility within the fascial sheath, or a specific direction of restriction that is noted.

Cupping

  • A technique used that involves applying cups to the skin with suction in order to improve the blood flow and circulation to the layers of tissue underneath the skin. This technique is indicated when the myofascia is restricted in one or more directions, which may be a contributing factor to your pain or abnormal movement pattern.   .

Tool assisted Myofascial Release

  • Technique to improve scar and myofascial restriction with instruments that are either metal or plastic.

Improving the myofascial restrictions, improving blood flow, and circulation are then followed with specificity of retraining the correct movement pattern in order to prevent recurrence of the restriction
